UAE Family Sponsorship Salary Rules Explained: What Actually Changed, and What Didn't

World Visa Academy 83 views

The Claim You've Probably Seen, and What's Actually True

If you've come across a headline saying the UAE just raised the salary needed to sponsor your family, here's the honest breakdown. Nothing has changed recently for the visa most people actually mean, the one that lets a spouse and children live in the UAE long term. That threshold has sat at AED 4,000 a month since 2022, and it hasn't moved since.

What did change, back in September 2025, was a different product entirely: the visit visa for relatives and friends, a short, temporary stay rather than long term residence. That change is genuinely real, it's just not new, and it's not the family visa people usually picture.

Getting this distinction right matters, especially if you're advising clients, because giving someone the wrong salary figure for the wrong visa type can derail their entire plan.

What Hasn't Changed: The Standard Family Residence Visa

If a UAE resident wants their spouse and children to actually live with them, not just visit, this is the visa that applies, and its salary requirement has been stable for years.

To sponsor a spouse and children, the published minimum is AED 4,000 per month, or AED 3,000 per month if the employer also provides accommodation. This applies regardless of job title, a deliberate change from the pre-2022 system, which restricted sponsorship by profession, only certain job categories, like engineers or accountants, could sponsor family even at the same salary level. That profession based gate was removed in 2022, and salary alone has determined eligibility since.

A few important variations sit alongside this baseline. Female sponsors face a different bar: AED 10,000 per month, and typically need to be working in an approved profession such as medicine, engineering, teaching or nursing to sponsor a husband and children. Parent sponsorship doesn't have one fixed, published minimum. Instead, GDRFA assesses the sponsor's overall financial capability, though in practice, applicants sponsoring parents generally need a monthly salary in the AED 15,000 to 20,000 range, along with proof of suitable accommodation and financial stability. Golden Visa holders get the most flexibility of all, with no minimum salary requirement to sponsor immediate family at all.

None of these figures have shifted recently. This is the part of the system that has stayed genuinely stable.

What Actually Changed, and When: The Visit Visa Salary Tiers

Here's the real story behind the confusion. On September 29, 2025, the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, the ICP, introduced formal income tiers for a completely different visa: the visit visa, used when a resident wants to bring a relative or friend to the UAE for a temporary stay, not permanent residence.

Under this system, residents earning at least Dh4,000 a month can sponsor first-degree relatives on a visit visa, meaning a parent, spouse, son or daughter. Residents earning at least Dh8,000 a month can sponsor second or third-degree relatives, covering siblings, grandparents and grandchildren under the second degree, and uncles, aunts and cousins under the third. Sponsoring a friend, someone with no family relationship at all, requires a monthly income of at least Dh15,000, and unlike relative sponsorship, no proof of kinship is needed here, since there's no kinship to prove.

This was part of a broader ICP reform package announced the same day, which also introduced four new visit visa categories for specialists in artificial intelligence, entertainment, events, and cruise ship and yacht tourism. ICP Director General Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili said the changes reflected ongoing studies of residency trends and stakeholder feedback, aimed at improving transparency and supporting the UAE's economic diversification goals.

Why These Two Rules Get Confused So Easily

It's an easy mix up to make, and honestly, an understandable one. Both rules use the word "sponsor." Both involve "family." Both were introduced by UAE immigration authorities. But they cover fundamentally different situations, temporary visit versus long term residence, and they carry very different practical consequences for a client's planning.

A client budgeting to bring their spouse to live with them permanently needs to know about the AED 4,000 family residence threshold. A client wanting to fly a cousin in for a two week visit needs to know about the Dh8,000 visit visa tier instead. Quoting the wrong one to the wrong client isn't a small error, it changes what income proof they need to gather and which visa category they should even be applying for.

Which Visa Does Your Client Actually Need?

  1. Ask the real purpose first. Is the family member moving to live in the UAE indefinitely, or visiting for a defined, shorter period? This single question determines which entire rule set applies.
  2. For a spouse or children relocating permanently, confirm the sponsor's basic salary, not total package, meets AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with employer provided housing.
  3. For a parent joining permanently, prepare the client for a less clear cut, case by case financial assessment, generally expecting to demonstrate income well above AED 15,000 along with suitable accommodation.
  4. For a relative or friend visiting temporarily, match the sponsor's salary against the correct tier, AED 4,000 for first-degree relatives, AED 8,000 for second or third-degree relatives, or AED 15,000 for friends.
  5. Always verify current figures directly through GDRFA or ICP Smart Services before advising a client, since basic salary, not allowances or total compensation, is what gets assessed either way.

Quick Checklist Before Advising a Client

  • Confirmed whether the client needs permanent family residence or a temporary visit visa
  • Checked the sponsor's basic salary on their attested employment contract, not their total package with allowances
  • Identified the correct degree of kinship if applying for a visit visa, since this determines the salary tier
  • Gathered proof of relationship documents for relative sponsorship, noting friends need no such proof but a higher salary instead
  • Checked whether Golden Visa or Green Visa status applies, since both carry different, often more flexible sponsorship rules

The Bigger Lesson Here

This is a good reminder that UAE immigration headlines move fast, but not every "new rule" is actually new, and not every rule about "family" applies to the visa your client is picturing. The consultants who take a moment to confirm exactly which visa category a claim refers to, before repeating it to a client, are the ones who avoid sending someone down the wrong path entirely.
